What is SNOMED CT?
A comprehensive clinical terminology covering diseases, findings, procedures, and body structures — finer-grained than ICD and increasingly required in mature EHR systems.

SNOMED CT — explained.
SNOMED CT (Clinical Terms) is a comprehensive clinical terminology maintained by SNOMED International, covering hundreds of thousands of clinical concepts (diseases, findings, procedures, body structures, organisms, substances). It is finer-grained than ICD — SNOMED's job is to support detailed clinical documentation, ICD's job is to support coding and billing. Many mature health systems require SNOMED for clinical documentation and then map to ICD for billing at the back end. The NHS in England, US Meaningful Use programmes, and an increasing number of national EHR mandates specify SNOMED support as a baseline. For an EMR vendor SNOMED support means: a search-as-you-type clinical terminology lookup, the ability to capture both the preferred term and the underlying concept identifier, and mapping logic between SNOMED concepts and the ICD codes the billing system needs.
