What is HL7 FHIR?
The current global standard for exchanging clinical data between healthcare systems — JSON / XML resources over a REST API.

HL7 FHIR — explained.
HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is the modern interoperability standard for exchanging clinical data between systems. Maintained by HL7 International, FHIR defines a set of 'resources' (Patient, Encounter, Observation, MedicationRequest, DiagnosticReport, etc.), each with a JSON or XML schema, and a RESTful API for reading, writing, and searching them. FHIR is the successor to earlier HL7 standards (v2.x pipe-delimited messages, v3 CDA documents) and is widely adopted by national health systems (US ONC, NHS England, Australian Digital Health, Canada Infoway) as the required interoperability format. For an EMR vendor, supporting FHIR means a clinic can export its records into a national repository, receive lab results from a regional pathology service, or share a discharge summary with another provider — without bespoke point-to-point integration work. For an integrator, FHIR is the standard API surface assumed by every modern healthcare app, AI tool, and analytics platform. The standard ships with profiles (regional or specialty-specific constraints) — a vendor needs to be able to support multiple profiles, not just the core spec.
Why operators care about hl7 fhir.
A clinical system without FHIR support is effectively a silo. Procurement processes in mature health systems screen out vendors that cannot demonstrate FHIR endpoint compliance. For private clinics, FHIR support is what makes future migration, partner integration, and AI augmentation possible without a rebuild.

EMR (Electronic Medical Records)
Healthcare & ClinicalA clinic's digital record of every patient encounter — vitals, history, notes, prescriptions, labs, attachments — owned by a single provider.
AI Clinical Assistant
Healthcare & ClinicalA side-pane AI in the EMR that summarises history, drafts notes from voice, suggests differential diagnoses, and flags drug interactions.
HIPAA
Compliance & DataThe US healthcare-data-protection law governing Protected Health Information (PHI) — covers privacy, security, breach notification, and business-associate agreements.
Clinic Management System
Healthcare & ClinicalThe single platform that runs a clinic or hospital — EMR, appointments, billing, lab, radiology, pharmacy, patient portal, telemedicine and (in 2026) a bounded AI clinical assistant.
Clinical Decision Support (CDS)
Healthcare & ClinicalSoftware inside the EMR that surfaces evidence-based guidance — drug interaction warnings, screening reminders, differential diagnoses — at the point of care.
DICOM
Healthcare & ClinicalThe international standard for storing, transmitting, and displaying medical images — every CT, MRI, X-ray, and ultrasound runs on it.
E-Prescribing
Healthcare & ClinicalIssuing prescriptions electronically from the EMR to the patient's preferred pharmacy — with drug interaction checks, formulary lookup, and audit trail.
E-Prescription
Healthcare & ClinicalThe fully-digital workflow from clinician prescription writing → drug-interaction check → national prescription network submission → pharmacy dispensing → patient pickup — with audit at every step.
