OPITO (Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organization) is the international standard-setting body for safety + competency training across upstream and midstream oil & gas operations. Originally established for the North Sea offshore industry, OPITO standards are now adopted across upstream oil + gas operators worldwide — KSA, UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, US Gulf, Norway, Brazil, West Africa. For visitor management at oil & gas sites, OPITO matters because every contractor or visitor entering an OPITO-compliant facility must demonstrate the relevant OPITO-certified competency (typically BOSIET for offshore visitors, MIST for onshore upstream, HUET for helicopter underwater escape, FOET for refresher) before site access is granted. The visitor management system must therefore integrate OPITO certification records — either via direct OPITO database query, via the contractor's HR system, or via document upload at registration with expiry-date checking. Beyond OPITO, oil & gas visitor management must enforce PPE verification (helmet, hi-vis, boots, eye protection), permit-to-work integration (the visitor cannot enter a hazardous area without an active permit), and emergency-evacuation roster (real-time who-is-on-site so HSE personnel can account for everyone during a drill or incident).
